Hiring local workers has benefits that extend beyond a company’s day-to-day needs. At AB Homes, this has been good for us—and for our community. When we started our business in 2013, Dan and I wanted it to reflect the things that were most important to us. Our goal was to offer a superior custom home-building experience; use quality materials; and hire local workers and suppliers as part of our team. As the general contractor for the homes we build, I can’t emphasize enough the importance of this last point. We work with approximately 30 subcontractors, who live here in Hampton Roads.

Gifts from the Heart
by Brandon Simpson and Dan Lawson
Since starting AB Homes, we’ve hosted a charitable giving program that really makes us smile. For every home we build, our company donates $1,000 to the charity that touches that homeowner’s heart. In fact, that’s what we call our program, Gifts from the Heart. Over the years, we’ve donated more than $73,000 to organizations such as Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, Tidewater Autism Society, The Make-a-Wish Foundation and Operation Smile, along with many other worthwhile groups.
We feel blessed, being able to put people in the home of their dreams. So this is a small way to give back to the organizations that are meaningful to our clients, while getting to know more about them and their interests.
Last year, we built a home for a Navy couple, who were relocating from Washington, D.C., to Norfolk to report to a new command. With children leaving their nest, and plans to retire in a few years, they were looking to downsize to a smaller space and contracted with AB Homes to build a four-bedroom/three-bath home. For their Gifts from the Heart donation, they chose the Wounded Warrior Project supporting veterans who have sustained injuries following 9/11.
A few months later, when completing work on a custom-built home for another couple, they selected a nonprofit called Compassion International. A donation to this group helped sponsor a young girl in Ethiopia, providing her with access to education, clean water, medical care, food and a safe, mentoring environment. The husband and wife had previously sponsored a child through this program and knew what a difference the services make for those living in a struggling country. We were glad to oblige.
Getting to know families like these, and all of the AB Homes customers we’ve worked with over the years, makes our jobs fulfilling. Being able to donate to the charities of their choice? Well, that’s just a gift from the heart.
All the best,
Brandon and Dan
