There are many families in Hampton Roads who are experiencing homelessness and living in poverty. To help make the holidays a little brighter for families in need, AB Homes is coordinating a toy drive for our friends at ForKids. This nonprofit organization provides emergency shelter to families and children in the region. It’s one of the largest area providers of services to families experiencing homelessness. And they support 14 cities and counties in Southeastern Virginia—including the Suffolk area.

Shop Local on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 30th, 2019
by Brandon Simpson and Dan Lawson
One of the nicest things about living in a small town is getting to know the people we do business with. Like us, they live around the corner and work down the road, contributing to the economy on a local level. In fact, for every dollar spent at a small business in the U.S., approximately 67 cents stays in the community.
The Saturday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 30th, 2019 is Small Business Saturday.
We hope you will leave the frenzy of Black Friday behind and take a leisurely day browsing in the independently owned shops, restaurants, businesses and services in your hometown. That’s what we’ll be doing.
As you may know, we call Suffolk home. Known as the Gateway to Coastal Virginia, this area is the perfect spot for folks who like country roads, beautiful views, chef-owned restaurants, a growing arts scene and lots of one-of-a-kind shops. From markets selling homegrown produce and Suffolk’s famous peanuts, to stores specializing in apparel, home décor, fine wines, furniture and fine art, the city is a sweet spot to find amazing gifts. Heck, there’s even a saddlery here where you can buy boots for yourself and bits for your horse.
When it’s time to wind down your day, head to Harper’s Table for locally-sourced Southern cuisine, or Arthur’s General Store to grab a sub and catch some homemade music on Friday nights. Check out Suffolk Tourism’s Uniquely Suffolk site for a complete listing of local stores, and this link for all the great places to eat.
The things that make a hometown great.
This time around, our blog message is less about home building and more about the things that make a hometown great. Shop small, spend big and support your local small businesses for the holidays—and every day.
