What we love about Suffolk
by Brandon Simpson and Dan Lawson
We love Suffolk Virginia! If you’ve followed our “On the Homefront” blog, you may know that we were born and spent our childhoods in Suffolk. Now, we live and work here. We started AB Homes in 2009 for people looking for affordable, custom-built homes in a quiet country setting. When we meet with clients who are relocating from outside the region, we enjoy telling them what we love about Suffolk.
Suffolk is the “Gateway to Hampton Roads.”
You can go Anywhere from Here
Suffolk is the “Gateway to Hampton Roads.” The city offers a quiet country setting within the larger, vibrant Hampton Roads region. In less than a 30-minute drive, you can be in downtown Norfolk watching the minor-league Tides team play ball or catching some rays at the Virginia Beach oceanfront. Suffolk is an ideal point for traveling around the region, but most residents don’t want to go too far. With 430 square miles of rolling terrain, woods, and waterside views, you may prefer to kick back here at home.
Scenic, Spacious Lots
The city’s rural landscape is a big selling point for our clients. We buy and maintain an inventory of lots that reflect the country lifestyle. If you like to fish or boat, there are waterfront lots and those within view of the water. A young family will want to be close to schools, recreation centers, and shopping; we offer these options too. Or, if you want to get away from it all, we have land to offer in more remote locales.
Suffolk has got Home-Town Charm
Home Town Charm
If you like chef-owned restaurants, a growing arts scene and independently-owned shops, you’ll love life here. The area is rich with farm-to-table eateries featuring local produce and stores specializing in apparel, home décor, and fine art. Insider tip—Suffolk has been home to the Planter’s Peanut Center since 1967; the city mascot is Mr. Peanut.
With a population of more than 92,000 and 28 neighborhoods, Suffolk is the 13th largest community in Virginia. Residents work in a mix of occupations, including the service men and women who serve at nearby military bases. The city has excellent schools, youth sports teams, an active art scene and recreation centers. Insider tip—the former Suffolk High School is now the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, offering classes, an art gallery and performances on the school’s original stage.
The Great Outdoors
Water and woods combine to make Suffolk one of the most scenic places to live in the region. You can fish, boat, bike, paddle, hike, golf and camp throughout the city. Trails, parks, and recreation areas abound. A focal point is the Nansemond River, which originates at Lake Meade in the city’s downtown. And, Suffolk is one of two Hampton Roads cities that contain part of the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.
