7 Safety Features Every Home Should Have

by Brandon Simpson and Dan Lawson

How important is home safety to you? You wouldn’t think about browsing the internet or making online purchases without security software installed. Your home also should have security features to protect you, your valuables, and your loved ones. Here are seven safety features that every home should have. With these safety features in place, you can rest easy knowing your house, and everyone in it is safe and secure.

Home Safety

1. Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detectors

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), you should have smoke detectors on every level of your home and one in every bedroom. At AB Homes, we install these (hard-wired with battery backup) in every home, in line with these guidelines. We also provide carbon monoxide detectors in homes that have a gas fireplace or gas appliances. Test all detectors at least once a month by pressing the button to make sure the alarms are working.

2. Fire Extinguishers

Having fire extinguishers in a home is a necessity and should be visible in easy-to-reach locations. Check these yearly to make sure the locking pin is intact, the tamper seal is unbroken and the pressure gauge or indicator is in the operable range. As a courtesy, we provide one fire extinguisher for our homeowners when they move in and encourage them to place additional ones throughout their residence.

3. Home Insurance

Homeowner’s insurance protects against damage to your home and robbery. Depending on the policy, it may cover natural disasters as well—but be sure to check. Consider the environment in which you live and the likelihood of flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other natural disasters. You may need supplemental insurance to cover these events.

4. Exit Plan and Natural Disaster Preparedness

Create an exit plan in the event of fire, dangerous weather, or emergency situations that could affect your home. This ensures that everyone knows what to do or where to go to stay safe. Think about the types of emergencies that may occur, and prepare a plan for each. Make sure to include your pets in your planning.

5. Floodlights

These can be helpful features to have for safety at night outside of your home and for discouraging late-night intruders.

6. First-Aid Kit

Have at least one fully-stocked first aid kit in your home. The Mayo Clinic has a list of recommended supplies, medications and emergency items to stow in your kit at this link.

7. Security Locks and Systems

At AB Homes, we provide dead-lock bolts on all outside doors and an exterior keypad for entry into the garage. Using a security service or installing features such as video doorbells that sync to your Smartphone are other ways to help keep you and your property safe.

All the best,

Brandon and Dan
