On the Home Front
Blog Give Me Land, Lots of Land and the Starry Skies Above
by Brandon Simpson and Dan Lawson
One of the things we enjoy most about our jobs is traveling the back roads, scouting for just the right properties to suit the needs of our clients. Constructing custom-built new homes in the wide-open spaces of Suffolk, Isle of Wight County and nearby areas is our specialty. We live here too, so we can relate to people who yearn more for starry skies than city lights.
We’re always on the lookout for single and multiple lots, small farms, timberland, distressed properties and investment properties. When we see a site that appeals to us, and fits the character of the homes we build, we buy it and add it to our inventory.
Someone asked us recently, what comes first – showing customers a home site or deciding on a home style and floor plan? It’s the latter. When working with our clients, we first invite them to our model home for a walk-through and meeting. There, we talk about our building philosophy, show them examples of homes we’ve built and explain how building a home works, from start to finish. If they’re interested in moving forward, the next step is for them to pre-qualify with our preferred lender. After that, they select one of our homes (we have many from which to choose), customize their floor plans and match the home they’ve selected with one of our lots.
We learn a great deal about our homebuyers through the buying process. And it’s exciting to show them a property that reflects what they’re looking for in both their home and lifestyle. If they like to fish or boat, maybe it’s a waterfront lot or a location with easy access to our region’s beautiful waterways. A young family will likely want their home to be close to schools, recreation centers and shopping. And outdoor sports enthusiasts may want land on which they can ride and stable their horses, bike, hike or hunt.
Building a home on a private lot has other benefits too. For one, there are no homeowner association fees. Buying a condominium, townhouse or single-family home in a planned community may spare you the responsibility of home maintenance or use of the fitness center. But over time the annual fees will add up. In comparison you could have saved that money and installed your own pool in the privacy of your yard.
And you’ve heard the saying, fences make good neighbors? That’s needed when homes are yards apart, but not in our area. There’s plenty of room to roam, garden, grill, play games, pitch a tent and park your boat.
So, if what we’ve outlined here makes sense to you, and you’re looking for a new home, consider checking out our neck of the woods. And, if you are looking to sell land, give us a call. What we do is not for everybody. But for people who are looking for this kind of lifestyle, it’s a breath of fresh country air.
All the best,
