A Single-Story or Two-Story Home; Which is best?
by Brandon Simpson and Dan Lawson
Single-Story Versus Two-Story
Buying a house comes with big decisions, including whether it will be a single-story or two-story home. How do you know which is best?
With more than a dozen floor plans from which to choose and customize, AB Homes offers lots of lifestyle options. We specialize in custom-built; and we want every customer to have their dream home constructed to their specifications. When meeting our clients for the first time, many have decided already the single-story vs. two-story home debate.
For those who are wavering, we have a few observations.
Single-story homes with an open layout have some great advantages.
There’s a communal space for cooking, living and dining; ease in accessing bedrooms on the same floor; and energy efficiency. Families with small children and older adults like these floor plans. It addresses safety and mobility concerns, with the simplicity of daily living. And, less square footage means less space to maintain—and clean!
For growing families seeking spacious living and privacy, a two-story home fits the bill.
The extra room allows for more design options, such as formal foyer, stylish staircase and access to scenic views. Having bedrooms on the second floor provides privacy for all. On the flip side, heating and cooling expenses can run higher, and staircases can be troublesome for toddlers and older adults. One more advantage, a smaller house footprint means there will be less cost per square foot for roof, plumbing and wiring materials.
Then there’s the yard to consider.
Single-story designs take up a bigger perimeter and more acreage than two-story homes. We specialize in building custom homes on large, rural lots. Lack of outdoor space isn’t an issue for our customers, but it may be something to consider when working with other companies.
So which is better; a single-story or two-story?
It’s a personal choice, based on your family needs, lifestyle and peace of mind. Whichever option you choose, you can count on us to build the home you desire—the way you want it.
All the best,
Brandon and Dan
