When you’re looking to build a new home, it can be difficult to decide between the different cities in the area. AB Homes builds customizable new construction homes in Suffolk and Chesapeake, as well as in areas like Southampton County and Isle of Wight County. So should you make the move to Chesapeake or Suffolk? While both are great places to live, if you’re weighing your options, here are a few reasons why Suffolk might be the better choice for your new home.

Rapid Growth and Rising Costs in Chesapeake

Chesapeake has seen rapid growth over the years. With increased demand for housing, the cost of land and housing has risen significantly. While Chesapeake remains an excellent place to live, especially if you work nearby or prefer to be closer to Virginia Beach, it’s essential to consider how these rising costs might impact your budget.

More Affordable Living in Suffolk

Suffolk, on the other hand, offers more available land and a lower cost of living on average. Despite experiencing its own growth, Suffolk is the largest city in Virginia by land area. This means there are still many spots that haven’t been developed yet, giving you more options for finding the perfect place to build your home.

At AB Homes, we’re committed to providing both quality and value. In Suffolk, you’ll get more bang for your buck, with more space, privacy, and peace and quiet. That’s why we build most of our homes in Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, and Southampton County. Of course, if your budget allows, we can also build in Chesapeake!

Commuting Considerations

If you’re concerned about your daily commute, here’s what you need to know. Living in Chesapeake, particularly in areas like Butt’s Station, means you’re about 30 minutes away from key locations like Downtown Norfolk, Oceana, and Little Creek, depending on traffic.

Living in Suffolk will require a bit more driving time to the other cities in Hampton Roads, especially if you’re in South Suffolk. From Downtown Suffolk, the drive to Norfolk Naval, Little Creek, and Virginia Beach Town Center is around 40-45 minutes. While it’s a bit further, the trade-off in terms of cost and space can make it worthwhile.

Outdoor Activities and Amenities

Both Chesapeake and Suffolk are fantastic if you love spending time outdoors. Chesapeake boasts beautiful spots like Oak Grove Lake Park, Northwest River Park, and the Chesapeake Arboretum. Suffolk, on the other hand, offers Bennett’s Creek and Sleepy Hole Park, and let’s not forget The Great Dismal Swamp, which stretches across both cities.

For golf enthusiasts, Suffolk is a hidden gem with six golf courses to choose from. When it comes to shopping, dining, and other necessities, both cities stack up similarly. Chesapeake’s Greenbrier Parkway and Battlefield Boulevard are bustling hubs where you’ll find everything you need. Meanwhile, Suffolk’s Downtown area and Harbour View are growing rapidly, offering plenty of options as well.

Buying a Home in Suffolk or Chesapeake

You can stay busy and enjoy life in both Chesapeake and Suffolk, but if you’re looking for a little more space, peace, and value for your investment, Suffolk might just be the perfect place for your new home.
