Five Fun Ways to Savor Summer in Suffolk
by Brandon Simpson and Dan Lawson
It’s summer in Suffolk! Hot days and breezy nights; catching fireflies and splashing in the water. If you live here, you know how enjoyable it can be. If you’re not from this area, we hope you will come for a visit. No matter where you live in Hampton Roads, our hometown is easy to reach. What’s more, we have five fun ways to savor summer in Suffolk!
1. Go outside! It’s Summer in Suffolk!
With rolling hills and beautiful waterways, Suffolk has great opportunities for getting out and about: biking, hiking, fishing, golfing, swimming—you name it. But if you haven’t paddled our local waterways, you’re missing out. The Suffolk Tourism Office offers a guided kayak excursion of the Nansemond River, Aug. 21 at 9:30 a.m. The $40 registration fee includes the kayak rental and equipment. Meet at Constant’s Wharf Marina, 110 E. Constance Road; (757) 514-4130.
2. Create.
For artsy fun, while staying cool, the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts offers a great lineup of classes and workshops. Youth ages 8-14 can take dance, basket weaving, pottery, drawing, voice classes, and more. If you’re 15 or older, you can choose from creative writing, stained glass, photography, jewelry-making classes, and other creative offerings. 110 W. Finney Ave.
3. Look for ghosts.
Stroll through the shadows of Suffolk’s Historic Main Street, and look for signs of the city’s most famous apparitions. The Legends of Main Street, A Suffolk Ghost Walk offers summer dates of July 31, Aug. 21, from 8- 9:30 pm. Tours leave the Suffolk Visitor’s Center. Reservations required. Meet at 524 N. Main Street; (757) 514-4130.
4. Eat local.
There are excellent farmers and purveyors in this area, and boy do they grow and sell the most delicious foods! On Saturdays, from 9 am–2 pm, stop by the Suffolk Farmer’s Market and fill your tote with fresh produce, meats, fish, poultry, jams, pickles, honey, baked goods and baked goods. It makes us hungry just thinking about it. 524. N. Main Street; (757) 514-4130.
5. Trail hike during the summer in Suffolk.
Suffolk has miles of beautiful trails. We like the ones at Lone Star Lakes Park in Chuckatuck village. This wilderness park offers 11 lakes and spacious grounds where you can hike, ride horses, fish, crab and even use the archery range. Park rangers are on site to help with permits and information. 1 Bob House Parkway; (757) 514-4130.
We hope this inspires you to spend a day exploring our neck of the woods. Our parks and attractions can’t wait to see you!
