Ready to build your forever home? Retirees love Suffolk!
We’ve worked with many buyers who decided to retire and build their forever homes in Suffolk. They chose the area for its waterfront views, small town charm and slower pace over some of the larger cities in Southeastern Virginia. Combined with an affordable cost of living, Suffolk is growing in popularity as a place to put down permanent roots. Take it from us; this is a lovely area to live, no matter your age. But for retirees especially, there are wonderful reasons to consider Suffolk.
Central Location
Suffolk is the “Gateway to Hampton Roads.” With a focus on easy living, the city offers a quiet country setting within the larger metropolitan region. The Virginia Beach boardwalk, Norfolk concert venues, and Hampton’s historic attractions are within easy driving distance. And you can’t beat the convenience of the nearby Norfolk International Airport when you’re ready to travel. Or, like us, you may prefer to just kick back here in Suffolk!
An Affordable Forever Home
The website Liveability ranks Suffolk as one of the top five most affordable places to live in Virginia. While it’s the Commonwealth’s largest city by area, Suffolk has a smaller population than other Hampton Roads cities. A total of 92,000 residents live here year-round, and they have access to affordable healthcare and grocery costs compared to other Virginia cities.
The Waterways
With the Nansemond River and its many tributaries running through Suffolk, the city offers ample waterfront access. If you have recreational boating, fishing, or paddling in mind for your retirement, we can’t think of a more beautiful area. You will also discover beautiful city parks and natural areas for walking and bird watching.
Wildlife
With almost 107,000 acres of wetlands covering the Virginia/North Carolina border, the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Suffolk contains some of the most important wildlife habitats in the mid-Atlantic region. As a way to manage these populations, controlled hunting is allowed in the refuge by permit during selected months. Whether you enjoy this sport or prefer to observe nature, the refuge is a wonderful place to be.
Build Your Forever Home on a Large, Beautiful Lot
Suffolk has a laid-back, country feel with wide-open spaces. This is the perfect setting for building a home for your retirement lifestyle. At AB Homes, we have a variety of beautiful floorplans designed for accessibility, and you can customize your home to accommodate an open floor plan, hobby room, and ground-floor master bedroom suite (and more). Having a large yard has benefits too, from parking your RV or boat at home to hosting grandchildren for outdoor fun and games.
Volunteer Opportunities
Living an active lifestyle is an important part of maintaining your health as you age. In Suffolk, there are many ways for seniors to share their time and talents with others. You can volunteer with any of the city’s fraternal organizations, such Rotary and Lions clubs. Or, lend a helping hand at city schools, churches, non-profit organizations, and art centers.
