Top Pet-Friendly Features in a Home Floor Plan
by Brandon Simpson and Dan Lawson
Today’s homebuyers seek more than an open-concept kitchen and large master bath when looking at homes; now they want pet-friendly features for Fido and Fluffy. Pet ownership increased this past year, as more humans turned to furry friends for companionship to ease the stress of quarantine. We noticed this trend at AB Homes. More of our homebuyers were looking for roomy interiors and ample outdoor space to accommodate them and their animals.
Top Pet-Friendly Home Features to look for when Buying a Home
As pet owners ourselves, we can relate. Knowing everyone deserves their “fur-ever home,” here’s our list of the top pet-friendly features to look for when buying a home.
Cubbies and Mudrooms
Having a dedicated space to keep leashes, toys and a bench for humans to put on their outdoor shoes makes sense for people and pups. Most of our home plans feature a “drop zone” area near the back entrance, with coat hooks and cubbies that are perfect for organizing these items. Bonus points if this area has a sink close by for washing muddy paws.
Ample Storage Space
Let your pets be the focus of attention, not the accouterments that go with them! Homes with walk-in pantries, storage space, or a garage are perfect for holding large bags of pet food, travel crates, and gear.
Easy Access to the Yard
Many of our home designs feature a first-floor master bedroom suite. Our pet-owning buyers say this is perfect for taking their dogs out for late-night bathroom breaks. No stairs to maneuver!
Ample Outdoor Space
Building homes on large, private lots is a hallmark of our custom home-building company. This makes AB Homes ideal for walking and playing with your dog, stabling your horse, and hanging out with your pets outside.
Screened in Porch and/or Deck
Porch or deck-time with your pet is a go-to when you want to kick back and relax, without being too active. Cats especially can enjoy the outdoors from the safety of a screened-in porch. If your deck has a puppy gate, you and your canine companions can chill over a morning coffee or afternoon drink.
